Grímsvötn

Tími: 07. des. 2021, 10:55

Litakóði:  Gulur

Númer eldfjalls: 373010

Virkniyfirlit:
Only five earthquakes (all below M1) were detected between 15.00 and 21.30 UTC yesterday 6. December following the M3.6 earthquake. Seismic tremor, attributed to the flood that is now in its end stages, has been reducing. No significant changes have been observed in the gas or deformation data. A heat-induced depression in the ice surface (cauldron) newly formed over the past days SE of Grímsvötn. It is unknown if this is due to an increase in geothermal activity or if it is related to ice-magma interaction. However, the second hypothesis is not supported by the available data as this interaction process is expected to be seen in the seismic data and such signals have not been detected. More observations and measurements will be needed to understand the process which caused the new cauldron to form. Based on these current observations, IMO moves the aviation color code from orange to yellow as there are no clear indications for an imminent eruption.
