Virkniyfirlit:
Earthquake activity commenced around 14:00 UTC yesterday (4th July) beneath Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes Peninsula, followed by an intense seismic swarm that is continuing. Over 1600 earthquakes have occurred since the onset of this activity. The seismicity started beneath the known magma upflow region beneath Fagradalsfjall (in the vicinity of the July 2022 dike intrusion) with earthquake depths shallowing in the first few hours. Seismicity has now reached depths of ~ 2-3 km. At the time of notification, more than four earthquakes of magnitude larger than 4 have been measured in the area. No eruption tremor has been observed. The current activity is considered to be heightened unrest with increased likelihood of eruption within the coming hours to days, therefore the aviation color code is changed to orange.

Nánar um vá:
Since 15th of September 2022, Fagradalsfjall volcanic system is identified as a separate system within the Reykjanes peninsula. Until now Fagradalsfjall was accounted as a part of the nearby Krýsuvík volcanic system, however the recent two eruptions (2021 and 2022), in addition to preceding geological studies, indicate the evidence of a distinct feature and the need to identify and refer to it as a separate entity. Fagradalsfjall has been added to the Catalogue of Icelandic Volcanoes: https://icelandicvolcanoes.is//?volcano=FAG
