The effusive eruption which commenced on 16 July in Sundhnúkur crater row continues. The activity is now confined to one crater at the center of the ~2,5 km long fissure that opened on 16 July. Aside from a short-lived episode of groundwater and magma interaction, no forms of tephra have been ejected into the atmosphere. Lava flows mainly to the northeast, accumulating in a valley just west of Fagradalsfjall. High SO2 values have been detected throughout Iceland, as well as widespread volcanic haze due to low wind speeds that have prevailed for days. It is forecasted that low levels of gas pollution could reach the UK in the coming days.
