The effusive eruption which commenced on 16th of July on the Sundhnúkur crater row has ceased, with no activity observed in the crater since early morning. Volcanic tremor reduced on the 15th and has reached pre-eruptive level. No seismic activity is measured. Likelihood for another eruption in the coming days is considered relatively low. As such the aviation color code is moved back to yellow. IMO continues to monitor the area carefully.

Local hazards are still present in the area. They are mainly due to the cooling lava and release of gas from the lava field. Additional information about hazards in the area is available at the link: https://en.vedur.is/volcanoes/fagradalsfjall-eruption/hazard-map/ The current hazard level is assessed as low (green) in the southern part of the Reykjanes Peninsula, on both sides of Grindavík. According to the weather forecast, volcanic gases and ash from the eruption site are expected to be carried northeast during the map's period of validity. As only one crater remains active, the hazard area around the eruption site has contracted.
